OUR STORY

Our Story

In 1840, the ship Sultana completed its long journey to the United States of America. From Oman to Zanzibar, St. Helena, and finally New York, Sultana arrived carrying precious cargo: Omani dates. Crowds of Americans met the ship with great fanfare, and the popularity of these sweet treats spread quickly across the country.

Ahmad bin Na’aman, who led this mission, ensured the safe arrival of the dates. To show his appreciation to the United States of America government, he presented them with the sweet “fruit of heaven,” a token of hospitality rich in history and culture. The story of Sultana marked the culmination of something sweet: a powerful trade relationship between the West and near-East, with dates at its heart. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA even displays a portrait of Ahmad bin Na’aman as a testament to this important moment in history!

Today, we at 1840 Dates continue this legacy. Our founders have personal ties to its history: one lives right outside Salem, MA and has roots in Tanzania (of which Zanzibar is now a part), and the other lives in Oman, with roots in Zanzibar. Based in Massachusetts, we bring you the juiciest, most flavorful dates. Try them in baked goods, in a salad, or simply with coffee —however you enjoy them, each luxurious bite will transport you to the pristine beaches and sandy dunes of another world.

Experience the rich and natural Sweetness of our dates today!
